Master Philosophie

The tuition fee is 250 EUR per year.

At Universite de Caen Normandie in Caen, France, the Master Philosophie is a two-year master's degree in philosophy, taught in French, with studies starting in September and yearly tuition of 250 EUR. Philosophy as a discipline examines fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, ethics, and reasoning through close reading of historical and contemporary texts combined with structured argumentation. A typical program covers the history of philosophy from antiquity through the modern period, along with specialized areas such as ethics, epistemology, political philosophy, philosophy of language, logic, and metaphysics. Students learn to construct and evaluate philosophical arguments, engage critically with primary texts in their original context, and produce sustained written analysis on abstract and often contested questions. Seminars form a central part of philosophy study, where students present and defend interpretations of texts and debate competing positions with instructors and peers. The discipline also develops transferable skills in logical reasoning, clear writing, and the ability to analyze complex, ambiguous problems from multiple angles. Career paths for philosophy graduates are varied. Some pursue doctoral research with a view toward academic teaching and scholarship, a route that in France often involves further qualification through competitive examinations for secondary or higher education teaching posts. Others apply their analytical and writing skills in publishing, journalism, public administration, or policy work, where the ability to reason carefully about complex issues is valued. Philosophy graduates also enter fields such as human resources, communications, and consulting, where the discipline's emphasis on argumentation and critical judgment translates into practical professional skills, and some use the degree as preparation for competitive civil-service examinations in France.
