Master in Materials Science

Stuttgart, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The Master's in Materials Science at the University of Stuttgart provides a broad grounding in synthesis, properties, and structure-property relationships across a wide range of material classes, including metals, ceramics, polymers, biomaterials, and nanomaterials. Core lecture areas include material synthesis and production routes, thermodynamics and kinetics such as phase transformations, and both structural and functional properties including strength, conductivity, and magnetic behaviour. The programme runs over 4 semesters. Compulsory modules in the winter semester include synthesis and properties of inorganic materials, an advanced materials science laboratory, project planning, and an advanced science seminar. The summer semester adds atomic transport and phase transformations and polymer materials science. Students then choose a specialisation subject from options including advanced materials characterisation, functional materials, inorganic materials chemistry, materials theory and simulation, metals and structural materials, nanomaterials and surfaces, plastics engineering, or soft matter and biomaterials, each offering a selection of related modules. The programme concludes with a Master's thesis. The programme is taught in English and accepts students for both winter and summer semesters. It is based at the University of Stuttgart in Stuttgart, Germany.
