MATEMATICA

At Università di PISA, tuition is 2,900 EUR per year.

This two-year master's programme in Mathematics, delivered in English at Università di Pisa, provides advanced training in a discipline concerned with the study of quantity, structure, space, and change through rigorous logical reasoning. At the graduate level, mathematics typically branches into areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry and topology, probability and statistics, and applied or computational mathematics, allowing students to pursue either pure theoretical study or more applied directions connected to other sciences. Students commonly deepen their understanding of proof-based reasoning while also encountering specialized topics such as differential equations, numerical analysis, mathematical modeling, and, depending on the programme, connections to areas like mathematical physics, cryptography, or data science. Coursework at this level places significant emphasis on independent study and research, often culminating in a thesis that requires original work or a substantial synthesis of existing results. Seminars and reading groups are common features of mathematics programmes, exposing students to current research questions and different areas of the field beyond their own specialization. Graduates with a master's degree in mathematics pursue a range of careers. Some continue into doctoral study and academic or research careers, while others move into fields that rely heavily on quantitative reasoning, including finance, actuarial science, data analysis, and software development. The analytical and problem-solving skills developed through mathematical training are also valued in engineering, technology, and scientific research more broadly, making mathematics graduates adaptable across sectors that depend on rigorous quantitative methods. Teaching, both at secondary and university level, remains another common path for those who complete advanced training in the discipline. Studying mathematics in English within Italy offers international students access to a strong national tradition in the mathematical sciences over the course of the two-year degree.
