Medical Laboratory Assistant

Students alternate between classroom lectures, hands-on laboratory sessions and an eight-week supervised clinical placement. In labs you practice anatomy and physiology, basic lab techniques, histology, microbiology and specimen handling, while the clinical weeks provide direct experience in histology, specimen management, phlebotomy and microbiology at health-care sites across Saskatchewan. The program runs Monday to Friday with variable hours between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m., and expects 15-20 hours of weekly homework and reliable internet access for online components.

The programme prepares you for roles such as medical laboratory assistant in hospitals, community clinics, research or pharmaceutical labs, where you will perform venipuncture, process specimens and enter data in compliance with safety standards. Graduates may work in chemistry, hematology, microbiology or histology departments and are eligible to sit the CSMLS MLA certification exam, opening pathways to further study or specialised laboratory positions.
