Kiel University

Master in Medical Life Sciences

Kiel, Germany Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Medical Life Sciences at Kiel University builds a foundation for work in molecular disease research, drawing on human biology, pathology, and systems biology. Core courses in molecular biology, bioinformatics, clinical cell biology, medical statistics, and human genetics make the connections between medicine and the natural sciences visible, and students learn how to acquire, validate, and use scientific knowledge in a research context. From the second semester, students specialise in one of three focus areas: Evolutionary Medicine, which investigates how human-environment interactions have shaped current disease susceptibility; Inflammation, covering the molecular mechanisms of chronic inflammatory diseases and the interplay of genetics, environment, and inflammatory processes; or Oncology, which addresses molecular research into malignant diseases, including cell biology of tumours and the interaction of genetics and environment. A further focus, Genomic Diagnostics, explores bioinformatics-driven approaches to individualised disease diagnostics. Elective modules include Tracing Disease through Time, Imaging in medical research, MolOcular, Molecular Diagnostics, Metabolomics, Tissue Engineering, Neurosciences, Epithelial Barrier Functions, and Cardiovascular Epidemiology. The curriculum also includes soft skills classes in project management, career orientation, and English scientific writing. The programme runs over 4 semesters, starting in the summer semester. The fourth semester is reserved entirely for the Master's thesis. The programme is offered at Kiel University in Kiel, Germany.
