Medicine and Surgery is a six-year master's programme taught in English at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milano, Italy. This single-cycle degree trains students to become physicians, combining foundational science with clinical training across the full span of medical education. Early years typically cover anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and pathology, building the scientific base for understanding how the human body functions and how disease develops. Later years shift toward clinical rotations across specialities such as internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, psychiatry, and general practice, giving students direct experience working with patients under supervision in hospital and clinical settings. Medicine remains one of the most structured and regulated fields of study, since graduates go on to practise as doctors responsible for patient care. After completing the degree, graduates typically undertake further postgraduate training or specialisation before practising independently, following the licensing requirements of the country where they intend to work. Career paths span virtually every area of clinical medicine and surgery, as well as research, public health, and academic medicine, depending on the specialisation graduates pursue after the initial degree. The programme is delivered entirely in English, allowing international students to pursue a full medical qualification in Italy. Admission is limited to a fixed number of places, known as numero programmato, and applicants need a secondary school diploma to apply. This capped admission system is typical of medical degrees in Italy, reflecting the limited capacity of clinical training placements and the need to match student numbers with available teaching resources in hospitals and laboratories.
