Bachelor in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering

İstanbul, Turkey Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering studies the structure, properties, processing, and performance of the materials used in engineering applications, including metals, ceramics, polymers, and composites. The discipline sits at the intersection of chemistry, physics, and engineering, examining how the internal structure of a material at the atomic and microscopic level determines its strength, durability, and behavior under different conditions. Typical coursework includes materials science fundamentals, thermodynamics of materials, metal casting and forming processes, corrosion and failure analysis, and materials characterization techniques such as microscopy and mechanical testing. Students learn how materials are extracted, refined, and processed into usable forms, as well as how existing materials can be modified or new materials developed to meet specific engineering requirements. Laboratory work is central to the field, giving students hands-on experience testing material properties, observing microstructures, and evaluating how materials fail under stress, heat, or corrosive environments. As programs advance, students often explore specialized topics such as nanomaterials, biomaterials, or advanced ceramics, reflecting the expanding range of applications for engineered materials in modern industry. Selecting the right material for a given application, balancing performance, cost, and manufacturability, is a recurring theme throughout the curriculum. Graduates typically pursue careers in manufacturing, quality control, materials research, or industries such as automotive, aerospace, construction, and electronics, where material selection and performance are critical to product design. Some continue into graduate research focused on advanced materials development. This program is taught in English over 4 years at Marmara University in Istanbul, Turkey.
