Master in MFA in Editing

The tuition fee is 78,151 USD per year. The deadline to apply for the Aug 2027 intake is Dec 1, 2026.

The Editing discipline is one of six MFA tracks at the AFI Conservatory. Fellows spend two years refining editorial storytelling and technical craft, editing up to three narrative short films and assistant-editing at least three more in the first year.

First-year courses cover editorial principles through weekly Cycle-film screenings, sound editing and mixing in AVID Media Composer, assistant-editor workflow, and the Adobe and AVID toolkits used in professional edit rooms.

In the second year, each Editing Fellow edits one thesis film and assists on another, builds a portfolio reel (music videos, trailers, and thematic montage exercises reviewed and approved by faculty), and studies DaVinci Resolve color and Fusion tools alongside a Pro Tools sound-mixing sequence. Fellows graduate with a demo reel.
