Midwifery is the health profession focused on supporting women through pregnancy, childbirth, and the postnatal period, combining clinical skill with continuity of care. This bachelor's program in Midwifery is taught in English at Universita Politecnica delle Marche, in Ancona, Italy, and runs for 3 years. Students typically study human anatomy and physiology, obstetrics, and reproductive health alongside clinical training in prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postnatal support for both mother and newborn. Coursework often covers pharmacology relevant to pregnancy and birth, neonatal care, family planning, and the psychological and social dimensions of pregnancy and early parenthood. Ethics and communication skills are also emphasized, since midwives work closely with families during a sensitive period and often serve as the primary point of contact for routine, low-risk pregnancies. A substantial portion of midwifery education takes place in clinical settings such as hospital maternity wards, birthing centers, and community health services, where students gain supervised, hands-on experience assisting with deliveries and providing postpartum care under the guidance of qualified midwives. Graduates are prepared to work as midwives in hospitals, maternity clinics, and community health programs, providing care throughout pregnancy, birth, and the weeks that follow. Some midwives go on to specialize in areas such as high-risk pregnancy support or neonatal care, while others move into education, research, or public health roles focused on maternal and reproductive health. Because midwifery is a regulated profession, graduates typically need to meet licensing requirements in the country where they plan to practice, and studying in English broadens the pathway for international students into this field.
