Core coursework typically covers cell biology, biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology techniques, microbiology, and bioinformatics, together with foundational subjects in chemistry, mathematics, and general biology. Laboratory work is central to the field, with students trained in techniques such as DNA extraction and analysis, gene cloning, cell culture, and protein analysis, using equipment and protocols common to research and biotechnology settings. Students learn how genetic and molecular mechanisms underlie processes ranging from normal development to disease, and how modern biotechnology tools are used to study and manipulate biological systems.
