About the Program

The MSc in Human-Centred Intelligent Systems (HCIS) at RWTH Aachen University is a four-semester programme starting in the winter semester, based in Bonn. It addresses the intersection of computer science, software engineering, next-generation communication systems, and intelligent systems, with a structure built around three main blocks: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning; Human-Centred and Interactive Technologies; and Use and Societal Impact. Two mandatory courses anchor the first two blocks: Introduction to Learning Systems and Data Science, and Designing Interactive Systems. The third block includes courses such as AI Ethics. A fourth optional block covers additional general computer science topics. The programme features a significant proportion of research lab courses embedded in applied research at the Fraunhofer Institutes FIT and IAIS. A further lab can be undertaken at the university, at the institutes, or in cooperation with industry. Topics across the programme include data science, text mining, pattern matching, machine learning, computer graphics, speech and image processing, virtual and augmented reality, interactive systems design, explainable AI, and cooperative work environments. The master's thesis in the fourth semester can be completed in cooperation with industry. The programme is based at RWTH Aachen University, with course delivery in Bonn, Germany.
