This Bachelor of Arts in Music program explores how music functions and its diverse contexts of creation and reception. It begins with a foundational course, Music in Everyday Life, examining the musical experience and its societal contributions. Students engage with varied repertoires, theoretical frameworks, and research methods, while also having opportunities for performance, ensemble participation, and co-ops aligned with their interests.

Focus areas include Music Theory, Western Art Music, Ethnomusicology, Contemporary/Popular Music, Music Composition, Music Technology.

The program structure includes universitywide, language, and NUpath requirements, alongside core music coursework in theory, history, and ethnomusicology. Students select from Music in Context, Creative, and Capstone options, and complete music and supporting electives.

Graduates may pursue careers in engineering, sciences, business, humanities, and social sciences, often as part of a double major, or in fields related to the music industry.

The Boston campus dates to 1898 and is Northeastern’s founding residential campus.
