The PhD (Biomedical Engineering) focuses on developing advanced engineering skills and contributes to industry-focused biomedical research projects, identifying solutions to engineering problems that affect the human body. Students will have access to leading researchers and facilities in biomaterials, biomechanics, medical electronics, signal processing and tissue engineering, as well as 3D-printing facilities such as the Digital Manufacturing Facility, the Micro Nano Research facility and the 3DBioFab/Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery. Students will complete a compulsory research methods course, receive training in research integrity and ethics, and select studies in qualitative and quantitative research techniques. The program includes a substantial body of original research, preparation of a thesis or project demonstrating an original contribution to the field, and the ability to communicate complex or original research for peers and the community to an international standard. Graduates are encouraged to undertake research placements within industry partners, including St Vincent’s Hospital, and to develop solutions to patient-specific problems highlighted by medical professionals.

The School of Engineering has research strengths in biomedical technologies including micro/nano materials and devices, biomaterials and tissue engineering, signal processing, lab-on-chip diagnostics, and sensors and systems technologies.
