The PhD in Computer Science is NUS School of Computing's research doctoral programme for graduates with strong research potential. Students spend their first two semesters on advanced coursework before moving into a research project that culminates in a dissertation, and every candidate must pass a Qualifying Examination roughly 18 months after admission and a Thesis Proposal before proceeding to the PhD Defense. Coursework covers at least three of five research clusters (Algorithms and Theory, Computer Systems, Knowledge Systems, Media Technologies, and Programming Language and Software Engineering), mostly at level 5000/6000. Candidates who fail the Qualifying Examination or Thesis Proposal may be permitted to complete an MSc instead.
