China Medical University, in Central Taiwan, offers the Ph.D. Program for Aging as a doctoral program taught in English. The study of aging, often called gerontology when approached from a health and social science perspective, examines the biological, psychological, and social processes associated with growing older, along with the health conditions and care needs that become more common in later life. Students pursuing doctoral research in this field typically study the biology of aging at a cellular and molecular level, age-related diseases such as cognitive decline and chronic illness, and the social and healthcare systems that support older populations. Coursework and research in this discipline often also address long-term care policy, geriatric medicine, and the methods used to design and analyze research studies involving older adults, since aging research spans laboratory science, clinical medicine, and public health. As a doctoral program, the course of study centers on independent research culminating in a dissertation, requiring students to identify a specific question within the aging field and investigate it in depth over the course of their studies. Graduates of doctoral programs focused on aging pursue careers in academic research, university teaching, healthcare policy, and roles within organizations focused on elder care and public health, given how many countries are addressing the needs of aging populations. The field suits students with a background in biology, medicine, public health, or a related discipline who want to specialize in the science and care of aging populations. Delivered in English, the program is designed to be accessible to international students pursuing doctoral-level research in this area while studying in Taiwan.
