    About PhD program

At Norwegian School of Sport Sciences, applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

NIH's PhD programme is a research degree, typically lasting three to four years full-time, that qualifies candidates for an academic career and other professions requiring high-level research competence. There is no online PhD programme at NIH.

Admission is based on an application rather than open enrolment, and is normally available to: employees hired as an NIH doctoral candidate on an announced position (including predefined projects); candidates employed in sport sciences at another university or similar institution; and candidates whose project has been approved and fully funded by the Research Council of Norway, the EU, Stiftelsen DAM or a similar body. All NIH doctoral positions are announced via JobbNorge. All qualified applications are reviewed by an expert committee appointed by NIH, whose recommendation is decided on by NIH's Committee for Research Education (KFU).

Mandatory training includes courses such as an introduction course (PHD640), theory and ethics of science (PHD641), a thesis seminar (PHD642), university pedagogy (PHD643), and quantitative and qualitative methodology (PHD646, PHD645); PhD candidates at NIH have first priority on these courses, though external PhD candidates may also enrol where places remain.

    English Test Requirement

No specific IELTS/TOEFL or Norwegian-proficiency test score is published as a PhD admission requirement. NIH's PhD regulations (doktorgradsforskrift) state only that the dissertation may be written in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English (§10.1) and require applicants to state their planned thesis-writing language; no numeric language-test threshold is set as an admission criterion.
