The PhD programme in Infection Biology at Hannover Medical School's Center for Infection Biology (ZIB) is a three-year international programme launched in 2003. Up to 20 students are admitted each year following a rigorous selection procedure. The programme investigates complex interactions between hosts and pathogens using the combined tools of immunology, cell biology, and molecular biology. The programme is structured into six half-year modules. The first module establishes a common grounding in immunology, microbiology, virology, and cell biology for students arriving from diverse backgrounds including medicine, veterinary medicine, biology, biochemistry, and biotechnology. Subsequent modules provide deeper knowledge in key areas of infection biology. During the final two modules, students concentrate on completing their PhD thesis while attending relevant lectures and events. Throughout the three years, students participate in at least three method-based lab courses lasting up to five days each, covering techniques such as flow cytometry, two-photon microscopy, and genome and proteome analysis. Students also present their research at one to two conferences. Each student is allocated a supervisor and two co-supervisors. All enrolled students become members of the Hannover Biomedical Research School (HBRS). The programme is located at Hannover Medical School in Hannover, Germany.
