    About Chicago Theological Seminary

For 170 years, Chicago Theological Seminary has developed theological education around social justice. Its mission is to create greater justice in today’s world by collaborating with new communities, establishing fresh areas of study, opening minds to different ways of thinking, and living its beliefs more sincerely. The seminary presents its history as a continuing legacy of progressive firsts and social justice work.

Academic life reaches beyond traditional seminary models and the conventional boundaries of MDiv education. The seminary’s public program includes lectures, Wednesday Gatherings, convocations, and symposiums. Recent subjects include labor rights, LGBTQ experiences, interfaith and interreligious relationships, immigration, reparations, Black communities, womanist theology, Ramadan, Islam in America, and science for seminaries. These events show how theological education connects faith with social and public questions.

Located in Chicago, CTS places students in a city associated with many religious communities and public conversations. Collaboration, dialogue, and community engagement are central to the institution’s approach. International students should expect an education shaped by social justice, theological inquiry, and engagement with religious diversity in the United States. Lectures, gatherings, and the Our Seven Neighbors podcast provide additional opportunities to encounter perspectives on religious diversity, conflict, exclusion, resistance, and moral struggle.
