About the Program

The University of Warsaw's Faculty of Physics is authorized to confer doctoral degrees in physics, astronomy, and biophysics, and its PhD program in Physical Sciences in Physics and Astronomy runs four years, organized as eight semesters, with individual studies pursued under the guidance of an academic tutor or supervisor; a two-year extension is possible. The syllabus includes general classes shared across all doctoral studies, some of which can be taken through distance learning, totaling 60 hours. Students also take a selected class on developing teaching skills, University Teaching, worth 15 hours. Classes tied to the student's scientific discipline include 120 hours of lectures over the course of the studies and 120 hours of seminars and discussion sessions over the same period. Doctoral students complete professional teaching practice as part of their teaching classes, at 10 hours a year across the four years. Students who receive a faculty scholarship are required to teach, or take part in teaching, for 240 hours over the four years. Alongside these structured components, each student carries out individual academic work under their tutor or supervisor, which culminates in the doctoral thesis. The Faculty of Physics does not run doctoral programs formally in English, so foreign students prepare their thesis on an individual basis, with personal consultations and sessions with their supervisor forming the foundation of their preparation. Yearly tuition is EUR 5,000. The program draws on the University of Warsaw's established strength in physics and astronomy research, giving doctoral students access to supervision across a range of subfields within the two disciplines and in biophysics.
