University of Oulu

PhD in Physics and Astronomy, Doctor (4yers)

Oulu, Finland Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

The doctoral training programme in Physics and Astronomy at the University of Oulu trains independent scientists across several active research units. The Nano and Molecular Systems (NANOMO) Research Unit covers nanomaterials for sustainability, materials characterization, atmospheric physics, quantum computing, biomedical physics, and physics didactics, with experimental materials research carried out in synergy with computational work at international large-scale facilities such as synchrotrons. The NMR Research Unit develops and applies experimental, computational and theoretical magnetic resonance methods to characterize physical properties of molecules, materials and nanosystems, with applications ranging from carbon-neutral cement research to cancer cell metabolism and aerosol science. The Space Physics and Astronomy Research Unit focuses on solar activity and its effects on the heliosphere, Earth's magnetosphere, ionosphere, atmosphere and climate. Astronomy topics include the evolution and structure of galaxies, planetary ring systems, and high-energy astrophysics. The four-year programme starts in January 2026, with an application deadline of 30 April 2026. Doctoral students receive training in experimental and computational research methods suited to these disciplines. The programme is offered at the University of Oulu in Oulu, Finland.
