PhD in Physics

The University of Warsaw's Physics PhD program follows a general study track intended for doctoral students preparing an interdisciplinary thesis, combining one of the university's traditional research fields in Natural Science and Mathematics with at least one additional area. The program runs four years, organized as eight semesters, and is taught in English. Each PhD student works under two advisers drawn from different fields of research, and students may complete part of their project outside the University of Warsaw with the consent of the MISDoMP studies director and both advisers, provided they keep discussing their progress with those advisers. Doctoral students are required to take part in interdisciplinary doctoral seminars and to present their research results at least once a year. Coursework totals 240 credit hours: 60 hours in each of the two research fields tied to the student's interdisciplinary thesis, 60 hours in a research field directly connected to the thesis, and 60 hours in general knowledge courses, with course selection requiring sign-off from the student's advisers. These requirements are meant to close gaps left by earlier education and to support students in writing a genuinely interdisciplinary dissertation. Each student additionally carries a teaching load of 180 credit hours. Yearly tuition is EUR 5,000. Warszawa hosts one of Poland's leading physics faculties, with research spanning theoretical and experimental work across multiple subfields.
