Precision Engineering is a three-year doctoral program at The University of Tokyo in Tokyo, Japan, taught in English, with entry available in April or October. The University of Tokyo is Japan's oldest national university, founded in 1877, and organizes education and research across ten faculties and fifteen graduate schools. At the doctoral level, the precision engineering program focuses on advanced research in high-precision mechanical and manufacturing systems, covering areas such as micro- and nano-fabrication, mechatronics, metrology, robotics, and manufacturing process design. Doctoral candidates typically join a faculty research laboratory, design an original dissertation project, and work with precision instrumentation and manufacturing equipment to investigate specific engineering problems in fabrication, control, or measurement. The three-year structure allows students to move from foundational graduate study into sustained, independent research culminating in a doctoral dissertation. Graduates with a doctorate in precision engineering pursue careers in academic research, advanced manufacturing and mechanical engineering, robotics and automation, semiconductor and electronics industries, and further postdoctoral research. Applicants must submit English proficiency test scores, choosing between TOEFL or IELTS; TOEIC is not accepted. Screening of application documents is required, along with an interview that includes an oral examination and presentation, though no short essay or practical exam is required. There is no transfer system for the program, and pre-arrival admission is available, allowing accepted students to be admitted before arriving in Japan to begin the three-year doctoral program.
