Procedural Sedation

Over a 12-week period, the certificate runs for one semester in a blended format, with two days of classroom attendance each week. The curriculum is divided into two mandatory modules – Procedural Sedation and Quality and Risk Management – each worth five credits. Assessment combines continuous coursework with two face-to-face exam sessions held in January and May.

It is intended for registered nurses who are already working in settings where procedural sedation is performed, hold a current Basic Life Support certificate, and have competence in intravenous cannulation. Approval from a Director of Nursing and a Consultant Anaesthetist is required. The programme follows International Accreditation Standards for sedation safety, ensuring full patient assessment, monitoring and recovery criteria. Graduates gain enhanced competence to manage sedation safely and can pursue promotional opportunities within their employing organisations.

Guest lecturers from clinical practice deliver the specialist content.
