PhD in Program for Integrated Circuit Design and Automation

The tuition fee is 112,000 TWD per year.

National Taiwan University's Program for Integrated Circuit Design and Automation also offers doctoral study in northern Taiwan, extending training in chip design into independent research. At the doctoral level, students in integrated circuit design and automation move beyond established design methods to investigate new circuit architectures, design automation algorithms, or approaches to managing the growing complexity of semiconductor chips. Doctoral research in this field typically builds on foundational knowledge in digital and analog circuit design, computer architecture, and device physics, while developing specialized expertise in areas such as low-power circuit design, advanced verification methods, or novel electronic design automation techniques. The work often involves designing and testing new circuits or algorithms, requiring both strong analytical skills and familiarity with the software tools used throughout the semiconductor design process. Because integrated circuit design sits at the core of the electronics industry, doctoral research in this field is closely tied to ongoing developments in computing, communications, and consumer electronics. Graduates who complete doctoral study in integrated circuit design and automation typically pursue careers as senior IC design engineers, research scientists at semiconductor companies, or faculty positions at universities conducting research on chip design and automation. Others move into leadership roles at electronic design automation software companies, where advanced research skills are valued for developing next-generation design tools. Given Taiwan's role in global semiconductor manufacturing, doctoral training in this field connects academic research with an active regional industry. This program is taught in English at National Taiwan University in northern Taiwan.
