About the Program

National Taiwan University offers the Program for Integrated Circuit Design and Automation in northern Taiwan, a graduate program focused on the design of the semiconductor chips that power modern electronics. Integrated circuit design is concerned with how transistors and other electronic components are arranged and connected on a chip to perform specific functions, while automation in this context refers to the software tools, known as electronic design automation, that engineers use to design, simulate, and verify complex chips before manufacturing. Students in this field typically study subjects such as digital and analog circuit design, very-large-scale integration design methodology, computer architecture, semiconductor device physics, and the use of design automation software to manage the complexity of modern chip layouts. Because chip design involves enormous numbers of transistors on a single piece of silicon, automation tools are essential to managing the design process, and students learn both circuit design principles and the software workflows used throughout the semiconductor industry. Graduates of integrated circuit design programs commonly pursue careers as IC design engineers, chip architects, verification engineers, and electronic design automation software developers, working for semiconductor companies, chip design firms, and technology companies that develop their own custom silicon. Given Taiwan's position in global semiconductor manufacturing, training in this field is closely connected to an active regional industry. Some graduates specialize further in areas such as analog circuit design or digital verification, while others move into roles developing the automation tools themselves. This program is taught in English at National Taiwan University.
