About Religious Education for Primary School

If you are a qualified primary school teacher, a post-primary teacher moving into primary education, a parent with a keen interest in your child's religious formation, or a parish catechist, this Certificate offers the theological and pedagogical grounding needed to teach Religious Education in Irish primary schools.

The programme runs part-time over one year, delivered mainly online with two days of face-to-face lectures. Each of the four mandatory 5-credit modules – for example, Fundamental Theology and Foundational Ethics – requires about 100 hours of student effort and combines pre-recorded lectures, tutorials and continuous assessment. Modules cover topics such as ecclesiology, sacramental theology, biblical studies and practical RE teaching strategies.

A key distinction is that the qualification satisfies the Irish Bishops’ Conference requirement for teaching Catholic primary school RE, giving you the formal recognition needed to deliver the Grow in Love curriculum and to lead sacramental preparation.
