Sicurezza, Intelligence e Studi Strategici

Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies examines how states and organisations understand and respond to threats, covering topics such as intelligence analysis, strategic planning, counterterrorism, and the political dynamics of conflict and cooperation between states. Typical coursework includes international security theory, intelligence studies, strategic studies, and the analysis of specific conflicts or regions, giving students a grounding in both the theoretical and practical dimensions of security decision-making. Students in this field learn to evaluate intelligence and security information, understand the institutions responsible for national and international security, and analyse the strategic considerations behind policy and military decisions. This master's programme is offered by Università degli Studi di Trento in Trento, Italy, and is taught in English over two years, with admission determined through an entrance examination following a bachelor's degree. Graduates from this discipline typically pursue careers in intelligence agencies, defence ministries, international organisations, and research roles in security-focused think tanks, applying their training to the analysis of security threats and strategic decision-making. Because the field draws on political science, history, and international relations, coursework generally combines theoretical study with case-based examination of past and ongoing security challenges. As security threats increasingly extend into areas such as cyber operations and hybrid warfare, professionals trained in intelligence and strategic analysis are needed to interpret a widening set of risks facing states and organisations. Trento, where the university offering this programme is located, sits in the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy and has built academic strength in international and security studies, offering a setting connected to broader European security discussions.
