A second admission track into Hiroshima University's three-year doctoral Smart Innovation Program is available in Hiroshima, Japan, taught in English, with intake in April or October. Hiroshima University was established in a city recognized globally as the site of the first atomic bombing, and it follows a founding principle grounded in unity, freedom, and peace. The university today comprises 12 schools, 4 graduate schools, an attached research institute, a university hospital, and 11 attached schools, and it holds recognition as one of 13 universities in the 2014 Top Global University Project and one of 13 universities in the 2018 WISE Program. This doctoral track continues the Smart Innovation Program's interdisciplinary approach, in which candidates draw on fields such as information technology, engineering, and design to address problems that do not fit neatly within a single traditional discipline. Doctoral study of this kind typically involves advanced coursework spanning multiple technical areas, combined with an original research project developed under the guidance of faculty from more than one department. Career paths for graduates commonly include research and development roles in technology and engineering industries, academic positions, and leadership roles in organizations working on cross-disciplinary innovation. Admission into this second track of the Smart Innovation Program gives international doctoral candidates another entry point into a WISE Program-designated track at Hiroshima University, an institution formally recognized for its commitment to world-leading, innovative doctoral education.
