PhD in Special Program of “Engineering Science 21st Century”

Tuition comes to 535,800 JPY per year.

The University of Osaka works under the vision "Live Locally, Grow Globally," positioning itself as a university that works with its surrounding community on present-day social issues while pursuing research and education that extends beyond Japan. Its Special Program of "Engineering Science 21st Century" offers a doctoral track that runs 5 years, taught entirely in English, with entry points in April or October. Doctoral study of this kind generally centers on an original research project carried out under faculty supervision across an engineering science discipline, spanning areas such as mechanical, materials, systems, or applied physics research, and culminating in a dissertation. The extended 5-year structure allows candidates to combine foundational coursework with a longer research trajectory than a typical doctoral track, building depth in both fundamentals and specialized research methods. Coursework and seminars alongside the research track help candidates develop the technical writing, experimental design, and presentation skills expected of engineering science researchers, who apply physics, mathematics, and engineering principles to problems spanning multiple technical domains. For international candidates, doctoral study at a Japanese national university offers exposure to engineering science research connected to Japan's industrial and technology sectors, along with the chance to work alongside peers from a wide range of academic and national backgrounds. Because instruction is delivered in English, students are not required to already speak Japanese to participate in coursework and research discussions, though many use the 5 years of study to build working knowledge of the language over time. Graduates of doctoral programs of this kind commonly pursue careers in engineering research institutions, technology companies, or academia, applying the specialized research skills developed during their extended dissertation work to industry or scholarly problems.
