Bachelor in Theology

Theology is the systematic academic study of religious belief, practice, texts, and history, approached through critical and scholarly methods rather than devotional instruction alone. The discipline typically covers the study of religious scripture and its interpretation, the historical development of religious traditions, Islamic jurisprudence and law, and comparative study of different faiths and belief systems. Students usually begin with foundational study of religious texts and their historical context, then progress to more specialized subjects such as the philosophy of religion, ethics, and the social and cultural role of religious institutions. Language study is often central to the curriculum, since understanding primary religious texts frequently requires familiarity with the languages in which they were originally written or transmitted. Coursework may also address the history of religious thought, the relationship between religion and society, and methods of religious education, preparing students for roles that involve teaching, guidance, or scholarly research. Seminars and textual analysis are common teaching methods, encouraging students to engage critically with primary sources and existing scholarship rather than simply memorizing doctrine. Ethical reasoning and the ability to interpret complex texts in their historical and cultural context are skills emphasized throughout the program. Given the breadth of the discipline, students often develop expertise not only in religious studies narrowly defined, but also in related areas such as history, philosophy, and social studies of religion. Graduates typically pursue careers in religious education, community and institutional leadership, publishing, or continue into graduate study in theology, religious studies, or related humanities fields.
