Master in Tropical Forestry

This programme builds on fundamentals in forest management and focuses on the socio-ecological complexity of tropical and subtropical regions. Students develop expertise in analysing human-ecosystem relationships, implementing sustainable land-use strategies, resolving land-use conflicts, and communicating effectively across cultural contexts. Knowledge is drawn from social, natural, and technical sciences throughout. The four-semester structure divides its attention between social and ecological systems. The first semester emphasises theory and specialist forest subjects, with modules on forest policy, economics of forest resources, organisation and management, silviculture in the tropics, forest ecology, and urban forestry. The third semester integrates both strands through compulsory modules in research design, project planning, and management, and students choose elective specialisations in either forest governance or forest management. The fourth semester is reserved for the master's thesis, during which fieldwork is conducted in a tropical or subtropical country. Graduates are prepared for roles in forestry, government, non-governmental organisations, international organisations, consulting, and research, particularly in international and intercultural settings.
