    About Turcology

For Turcology, tuition is No tuition fees; 350 EUR/semester, while the application deadline is 1 September / 1 March.

The Master's in Turcology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz offers advanced study across the main branches of the field: linguistics, philology, and literary and cultural studies. The programme pairs theoretical knowledge with applied methodological training from the outset. Three consecutive linguistics modules each combine structural study of a Turkic language (or a Mongolic or Tungusic language, depending on scheduling) with a seminar on linguistic theory and a research-oriented seminar where students work on fieldwork, corpus linguistics, transcription, or quantitative methods. The literary and cultural strand runs in parallel, with modules covering Ottoman poetry, the Turkish historical novel, postmodern literature, secularism, religion, women's writing, and society in the late Ottoman Empire. Each course combines a theoretical component with close reading and interpretation. An elective module allows students to attend the Turcological Colloquium, learn an additional language, or participate in the Mainz Türk Edebiyatı Günleri. The programme runs over four semesters, with start dates in both the winter and summer semester, and the master's thesis is written in English. A study period at a partner university abroad is possible. Cooperation agreements exist with institutions in Turkey (Istanbul, Ankara, Adana, Eskişehir), Sweden, Poland, Macedonia, Czechia, Cyprus, and Uzbekistan (Bukhara State University). Graduates with a strong average may proceed to a consecutive doctoral programme. The programme is offered by the Department of Turcology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, located in Mainz, Germany.
