Master in Urban Design Master's Programme

The Master of Science in Urban Design at Technische Universität Berlin approaches urban design as an inter- and transdisciplinary field that sits at the intersection of architecture, urban and regional planning, urban sociology, landscape architecture, and environmental planning. The programme applies this perspective to urban systems and spaces from district to regional scale, with attention to both historical developments and current urbanisation processes. A central aim is to develop the skills of critical research-design: producing creative solutions to contemporary urban problems that are scientifically grounded and account for cultural, social, and political conditions. Courses span a range of disciplines, and much of the programme's interdisciplinary character is expressed through student teamwork in design projects, labs, and studios. Compulsory courses cover urban design projects, methods and tools, and an introduction to urbanism. The programme also includes a master's thesis colloquium to prepare students for independent scientific and artistic work. The programme runs over four semesters, starting in the winter semester. In cooperation with Tongji University in Shanghai, the programme is also offered as a dual degree, with the first year in Berlin and the second year in Shanghai.
