Things to watch

  • One government fee covers the whole first year. You pick either the long-term study visa or the long-term study residence permit, and both are CZK 2,500.
  • The upper figure is for a first year that needs two filings, usually a student who arrives on a long-term visa and then moves to a residence permit inside the country.
  • Travel medical insurance, certified Czech translations, and the apostille or superlegalisation of foreign documents are compulsory but priced outside the government fee schedule, so they sit on top of this table.

The accepted form is bank statements in your name, or a written commitment from the school, and it covers a full academic year.     The purpose of stay is proved by an acceptance letter or a confirmation of enrolment, and this document has to be an original rather than a certified copy. Study counts only where the programme is accredited or falls under one of the categories in section 64 of the Foreigners Act.

How to apply for a Czech Republic student visa

  1. Ask your university whether it can put you on Režim Student

    The Student Facilitation programme eases application submission for students from listed countries who have been admitted to a Czech university. The university, not the student, adds you to it, and the Ministry of Education keeps the list of participating institutions.

  2. Book an appointment at the mission that covers you

    Applications can be lodged only in a country you are a citizen of, hold a passport from, or have been resident in for the past two years. Missions schedule their own appointments, mostly by email or phone.

  3. Lodge the file in person and pay CZK 2,500

    The same CZK 2,500 applies whether you apply for the long-term study visa or directly for the long-term study residence permit, and it is not refunded if the application is refused. Choosing between the two is up to you.

  4. Wait up to 60 days for the Ministry of the Interior decision

    The mission forwards the file to the Ministry of the Interior, which decides. The 60-day period stops running whenever the proceedings are suspended, for example while you supply a missing document.

  5. Collect the entry visa and buy travel medical insurance

    If the residence permit is approved, the mission issues a single-entry long-term visa valid 60 days, purely for travelling in to collect the permit. You produce the insurance policy at this point.

    Within those 60 days you visit the local Ministry of the Interior branch, give biometric data, and later collect the biometric residence card. The card is valid for up to one year, or two in the cases the law sets out.

Work rights

A study residence permit carries free access to the labour market, so a student in a full-time accredited university programme can take a job without any separate work authorisation. The same applies to full-time students at a secondary school, conservatory, higher vocational school or a language school authorised to hold state exams.

Dependants

A spouse or child can join you on a family reunification permit once you hold a valid long-term residence permit and have lived in Czechia for more than 15 months, with both spouses at least 20 years old. The fee is CZK 2,500, or CZK 1,000 for a child under 15, and a consulate has up to 270 days to decide.

Processing time

The legal processing period for both the long-term study visa and the long-term study residence permit is 60 days. It does not run while the Ministry of the Interior is waiting for a document you were asked to supply.

After graduation

Graduates of an accredited university programme can move to a long-term residence permit for seeking employment or starting a business. It runs for up to nine months, cannot be extended, and gives free access to the labour market with no employer or job restrictions.

Language requirement

There is no ministry-wide language test for the study visa. The accredited programme's own admission decision proves the purpose of stay, but every supporting document has to be filed in Czech or with an official Czech translation.
