Things to watch

  • Hungary charges one fee for the whole thing. The residence permit application already contains the entry visa application, so a student applying from abroad pays EUR 110 and nothing more.
  • Holders of a Hungarian State Scholarship such as Stipendium Hungaricum, students with ministerial sponsorship, and Belarusian nationals applying for a study permit pay no administrative fee at all.
  • The card is posted to the address of your educational institution, so there is no separate issue or collection charge.
  • Hungary publishes no fixed proof-of-funds figure for students. The directorate lists the documents it accepts and leaves the amount to the caseworker, so that number is omitted here rather than guessed.
  • USD figures convert at USD 1 = HUF 313.05 and EUR 1 = HUF 364.55, the Hungarian National Bank rates on 28 August 2026.

    The purpose of stay is proved by an admission certificate from the institution, a document verifying student status, or other credible means. A residence permit for a preparatory course can only be extended once you have been admitted to a state-recognised higher education institution.

How to apply for a Hungary student visa

  1. Get admitted and pay the tuition the file has to evidence

    Hungary asks for proof of tuition payment as a mandatory attachment, so the money moves before the immigration process starts rather than after it.

  2. Apply at the Hungarian mission for your nationality or residence

    There is no separate visa application. The residence permit application already contains the request for the entry visa you need to collect the permit. Some posts accept files through honorary consuls, trade representations or an external service provider, so check with the mission that covers you.

  3. Pay EUR 110 and give your biometrics

    At a mission the fee is EUR 110, paid in euros or another convertible currency. Applications filed inside Hungary cost HUF 39,000 at a counter or HUF 26,000 through Enter Hungary, but that route is open only to nationals who may enter Hungary visa free.

  4. Wait for the decision

    The administration period is 15 days, and the authority must decide on the merits within 60 days of submission. Time spent waiting for missing documents is not counted inside that period.

  5. Collect the type D visa and travel within three months

    The consulate issues a single-entry type D visa allowing a stay of no more than 30 days and valid for three months. If you do not enter Hungary within three months of the approval, the approved permit becomes invalid and the right of entry lapses.

    A study residence permit is posted to the address of the educational institution, so the card is handed over there rather than at an immigration office. Do not start a second application online after applying at a consulate.

During the study period a student residence permit allows employment of up to thirty hours a week. Outside the study period you may work full time for a maximum of ninety days in a year.

Dependants

A study residence permit does not open family reunification. Hungary will not grant a family reunification permit to relatives of someone who holds or is applying for a study permit, a student mobility permit or a student mobility certificate. The one exception is a child born in Hungary while the permit is valid.

After graduation

Graduates can apply for a residence permit for seeking a job or starting a business, valid for a maximum of nine months and not extendable. It has to be filed through Enter Hungary at least 15 days before the study permit expires, because you must still hold a valid study permit when you apply.

Applicants must have the linguistic knowledge their studies require, proved by a language certificate, a diploma showing study in a foreign language, or other credible means. Hungary sets no single national test for this.
