    How to apply for a Russia student visa

    1. Get admitted, by contract or through the government quota

      Students can apply directly to a university on a paid basis, or compete for a state scholarship through the Education in Russia portal, which covers tuition for the whole program and the preparatory year but not travel, living costs or insurance.

    2. Wait for the university to obtain the invitation

      Admitted students, including quota holders, are issued an invitation that the consular section then works from. Nothing can be filed before it exists.

    3. Apply in person at the consular post that covers you

      Posts take student visa files in person by appointment. Some consulates warn that a long-stay student visa of more than 90 days is arranged after arrival through the migration service with the university's help, while the entry visa itself is the short one.

    4. Pay the tariff your post publishes

      Consular tariffs are set per post and per nationality. The Chennai consulate charges USD 80 for a single-entry visa issued in 4 to 20 working days and USD 160 for issue in three working days, made up of a consular fee plus reimbursement of actual expenses.

    5. Enter on a three-month visa and let the university renew it

      The first student visa is valid for three months. You renew it by applying through the university, and the second visa is issued for the entire year.

    6. Register as a foreigner within seven business days

      Staying more than seven business days after arrival means registering, which is mandatory under the law on entry, exit and stay. How you register depends on the visa and the accommodation, from a hotel doing it for you to the migration service.
