How much does a Spain student visa cost in 2026?

Applying for a student visa in Spain — the National student visa (type D) — costs $93 in fees you cannot skip: National study visa fee ($93). Situational extras (reciprocity rate (Australian, Bangladeshi, Canadian, UK, US nationals) and visa application centre (BLS) service charge) add up to $179 more. Amounts are US dollars. Spain bills in its own currency, so the exact charge moves with the exchange rate — the native figures are in the notes column where the fee schedule publishes them.

Things to watch

  • Spain charges two fees, one for the visa and one for the study-stay authorisation. A single application covers both, but the authorisation fee has not been republished since the 2024 immigration regulation replaced the old one, so no official figure exists to quote.
  • Stays of six months or less need no residence card. Longer stays need a TIE within a month of arrival, which carries its own fee.
  • Family members applying alongside you pay the full visa fee each and are not allowed to work.
  • USD figures convert at EUR 1 = USD 1.16 and USD 1 = INR 95, the rates on 29 August 2026.

How much bank balance do you need for a Spain student visa?

For the National student visa (type D) with a long-stay study authorisation, Spain asks you to show EUR 7,200 (about $8,352). The accepted form is Bank statements, payslips or a scholarship award, at 100% of the IPREM, and it covers 12 months of living costs, or EUR 600 for each month of a shorter course. This is money you show, not money you pay, so it never appears in the fee table above. Spain student visa requirements

  • Admission and paid enrolment at a recognised Spanish institution

    The acceptance letter must give your full name, the course title and its start and end dates, and you must show the enrolment or tuition fee has been paid. A part payment counts, and so does a written undertaking to enrol later if the university only opens enrolment closer to the start.

  • Proof of funds at 100% of the IPREM

    EUR 600 for each month you plan to stay, or EUR 7,200 if the course runs beyond a year. Three months of bank statements, payslips, business accounts or a scholarship award letter are accepted; credit-card statements are not.

  • Health insurance from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain

    The policy must match the basic cover of the Spanish national health service, with no co-payment, no excess and no waiting period. Travel policies and credit-card cover are rejected.

  • Criminal record certificate, for stays over 180 days

    One from every country you have lived in over the past five years, legalised or apostilled, translated into Spanish, and issued within the last six months.

  • Medical certificate, for stays over 180 days

    A doctor confirms you carry none of the diseases with serious public-health consequences listed in the 2005 International Health Regulations. Valid for six months.

    Foreign public documents need an apostille under the 1961 Hague Convention, or consular legalisation where the Convention does not apply, and a translation by a sworn translator into Spanish or the co-official language of the region you apply in.

How to apply for a Spain student visa

  1. Get admitted and pay your enrolment

    Pick a centre with official recognition; university programmes are listed in the national RUCT register. The acceptance letter and the enrolment receipt are what the consulate checks first.

  2. Apply at least two months before your course starts

    Article 36 of Real Decreto 1155/2024 sets the two-month lead time. Posts that have outsourced intake, including India and Argentina, take applications through a BLS visa application centre by appointment.

  3. File one application that covers both the visa and the authorisation

    The study visa application carries the application for the long-stay study authorisation inside it, so you submit a single file, but you pay two separate fees.

  4. Wait for the immigration office, then the consulate

    The immigration office rules on the authorisation within seven days of being asked. If that decision is favourable, the consulate issues the visa within a month. Silence counts as a refusal, and you can appeal within a month.

  5. Collect the visa within two months and travel

    The visa must be collected in person, or by a parent for a minor, within two months of the favourable decision. Miss that and the file is closed.

  6. Get your TIE card within a month of arriving

    Stays over six months need a Foreigner Identity Card, applied for in person at the police station of the province that processed your authorisation. Stays of six months or less need no card at all.

A long-stay authorisation for higher education lets you work, employed or self-employed, automatically and with no extra permit, up to 30 hours a week. Going over 30 hours cancels the authorisation, and the permission is limited to one autonomous community plus neighbouring towns.

Dependants

A spouse, registered partner or stable partner and minor children can hold visas alongside a higher-education student and stay for the same period. They are not allowed to work.

The immigration office has seven days to decide the study authorisation, and the consulate up to a month after that to issue the visa. Apply two months before your course starts.

After graduation

Finish a Spanish qualification at EQF level 6 (a bachelor's degree) or above and you can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business. It runs for 24 months and cannot be extended, and you may not work while you hold it. Apply in the 60 days before your study authorisation expires.

Spain sets no language test for the study visa itself; the consular document list has no language item. The entry language level is whatever your university requires.

The Police Clearance Certificate must come from the Regional Passport Office and carry an apostille from the Ministry of External Affairs. A state-level check is not accepted.
