Things to watch

  • The visa is the cheap half and is usually free for students. The charges start once a canton approves you and issues the permit.
  • These are the federal fees set in the Fees Ordinance to the Foreign Nationals and Integration Act. Cantons and communes can add charges of their own, so the real bill varies by where you study.
  • Where an external service provider takes the application its service fee is extra, and asking for a national visa to be issued urgently or outside working hours can add up to 50 per cent of the fee.
  • Switzerland has no federal figure for the money a student must show. Basel-Stadt asks CHF 2,000 a month and the mission in Tunis asks for about CHF 25,000 for a year, so check your own canton before opening an account.

    The application goes to the Swiss representation covering your place of residence, usually with an appointment booked through the external provider. A category D visa is what you need for any stay of more than 90 days.

  3. The canton decides, not the embassy

    The mission forwards the file to the migration authority of the canton where you intend to live, which examines it and takes the decision. The representation may only issue the entry visa once that authorisation arrives, and it does not give information while the file is being examined.

  4. Collect the visa and enter Switzerland

    The mission issues the entry visa after the positive cantonal decision. Missions warn that a student may be asked for extra documents by the university or the deciding canton at any point in the process.

    You register at the residents' registration office of your place of residence and give biometric data, after which the permit card is sent to your address. The federal fees are CHF 95 for the first permit, CHF 20 for the biometric capture and CHF 22 for producing the card.

Foreign students may work a maximum of 15 hours a week outside the holidays, and not before six months have passed since the course began. The cantonal authority has to approve the job, the employer submits the application, and the university must confirm the work is compatible with the studies and will not delay them. After graduation

Third-country nationals who graduate from a Swiss higher education institution have six months from the end of the course to look for work matching their qualifications, and may be admitted in derogation of the precedence given to Swiss and EU or EFTA workers if the job is of overriding scientific or economic interest. Basel-Stadt issues that job-search stay as a short-term permit for six months with no extension, granted on proof of sufficient means, suitable accommodation and the final degree. There is no entitlement to it where the only thing you did in Switzerland was a postdoc.

In New Delhi an English test result such as TOEFL or IELTS is mandatory for student applications, and documents in other languages generally have to be translated into German, French, Italian or English.
