About Master in Applied Economics

Applied Economics at the University of Wuppertal is a two-year, English-taught master's programme that develops skills in empirical economic analysis, data evaluation, and evidence-based policy reasoning. Students learn to apply econometric, quantitative, and experimental methods, assess the significance of empirical studies, and derive well-founded policy recommendations from a solid theoretical foundation. The programme places particular emphasis on the international dimensions of economic action and on training students to identify causal economic relationships using data. Over 4 semesters spanning from either the winter or summer semester, the programme combines compulsory core courses, elective modules, seminars, and a Master's thesis. Four compulsory core courses cover fundamentals and statistical techniques for economic data, topics in the global economy, and advanced quantitative methods. Students then choose three elective courses from areas such as economic integration, innovation economics, environmental economics, public economics, capital market theory, and microeconometrics. Three seminars align with either compulsory or elective content, providing a forum for presenting and discussing scientific literature. The programme concludes with a Master's thesis. Small class sizes and a high degree of internationalisation are features of the programme, and students are encouraged to pursue a semester or summer school abroad at one of the programme's partner universities, with recognition procedures in place for academic achievements earned during those periods. Graduates go on to work as analysts in insurance companies, banks, large corporations, or international organisations, or in consulting, research, and public sector roles. This programme is based at the University of Wuppertal in Wuppertal.
