Applied Industrial Research

Through an eight-week industry placement, students acquire hands-on experience in applying advanced research methods to real-world challenges. This practical grounding is highly valued by employers in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors and also strengthens candidates for further doctoral or research-master study.

Week by week, the student works at the host organisation under the guidance of an industrial supervisor and an academic mentor, delivering a reflective portfolio and a professional presentation that show how their research supports the company’s strategic objectives. Support includes weekly meetings with the academic supervisor, regular contact with the industry mentor and access to peers and management at the host site, ensuring continuous feedback. The programme consists of a single, mandatory Applied Industrial Research module worth 10 credits, delivered online and part-time over one semester, with no on-campus attendance required.
