Hiroshima University offers a three-year doctoral Architecture Program in Hiroshima, Japan, taught in English, with intake in April or October. Hiroshima University is a national institution founded in the city of Hiroshima, the first city in human history struck by an atomic bomb, and it operates under a founding principle described as a single unified university committed to freedom and the pursuit of peace. The university comprises 12 schools, 4 graduate schools, an attached research institute, a university hospital, and 11 attached schools, making it one of the largest and most comprehensive universities in Japan. It was selected in 2014 as one of 13 universities for the Top Global University Project and again in 2018 as one of 13 universities for the WISE Program, a doctoral program for world-leading innovative and smart education. Doctoral study in architecture typically centers on an original research project in areas such as building design theory, structural systems, urban planning, sustainable construction, or architectural history, culminating in a dissertation developed under faculty supervision. Programs at this level generally combine advanced seminars, design studio work, and independent research, often drawing on laboratory facilities and collaboration with faculty working on related built-environment questions. Graduates of architecture doctoral programs commonly pursue careers in academic research and teaching, advanced design practice, urban planning agencies, and specialized technical consulting, where deep expertise in architectural theory and practice is required. For international doctoral students, Hiroshima University's status within Japan's Top Global University and WISE initiatives points to a research environment built for cross-border academic exchange, situated at an institution with a distinct historical role in the global conversation about peace and reconstruction.
