At the Sighthill campus, students work within an environmental chamber capable of replicating everything from high-altitude conditions like Everest Base Camp to extreme heat and humidity. This facility served as the primary training ground for world record-breaker Mark Beaumont as he prepared for his historic 79-day cycling journey around the world. By examining the methodology employed by Associate Lecturer Dr. Lesley Ingram in coaching Beaumont, participants gain unique insights into the practical application of sports science at the highest level of human endurance.

Applied Physiology in Action

This programme explores the rigorous scientific preparation required for elite performance, moving beyond theory to examine the physiological realities of:

• Heat Acclimation: Developing specific protocols to trick the body into adapting to extreme thermal stress before entering challenging climates.
• Performance Testing: Utilizing VO2 max assessments to optimize exercise efficiency and minimize fatigue during prolonged exertion.
• Recovery and Health: Analyzing the long-term impact of sleep deprivation and extreme physical load on immune system function and cellular repair.

By dissecting the real-world data from Beaumont’s record-breaking attempt, students evaluate the risks and physiological limits inherent in ultra-endurance sport, bridging the gap between classroom theory and the demands of top-tier athletic consultancy.
