Training includes hands-on work and classroom learning. Topics include diagnosing problems, repairing engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, suspension, electrical systems, and air conditioning.

Apprentices must find an employer who agrees to hire them. Once hired, they sign an apprenticeship contract and begin training. Each year, nine weeks of technical training are completed at Medicine Hat College. The rest of the time is spent working under supervision in a shop. Tools for testing are used. Manufacturer manuals are followed. Repairs and adjustments are performed.

After four years, 1530 hours of on-the-job training and required technical courses are completed. A journeyperson certificate is earned. This allows independent work in the trade. Some graduates become service managers or open their own repair shops.
