The Berlin Mathematical School (BMS) is the joint doctoral programme of Berlin's three universities and the graduate school of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+. Research and teaching span geometry and topology, algebraic geometry and number theory, stochastics and mathematical finance, discrete mathematics and optimisation, discrete geometry, numerical mathematics, applied analysis, and mathematics for AI. The programme is divided into two phases. Phase I lasts four semesters and leads from the Bachelor's degree to a qualifying exam. Students register as Master's students at one of the three universities, complete five core courses and at least two advanced courses including a seminar, and attend the MATH+ Friday Colloquia. Passing an oral qualifying exam is required to progress to Phase II, and students may earn an MSc at the end of Phase I. Phase II is the research phase, in which doctoral candidates pursue their dissertation while drawing on Berlin's broader mathematics research environment, including DFG Research Training Groups and International Max Planck Research Schools. The BMS also offers a mentoring programme for individual academic and personal guidance, soft skills seminars, and additional support for students with children or those who are pregnant. The programme is offered in Berlin by Technische Universität Berlin together with its partner universities.
