    About Master in Bioinformatics

The University of Zurich offers a Master's program in Bioinformatics. This program is taught in German. It focuses on using IT methods to analyze large life science data, like genome sequences. Students learn database skills and algorithms for data analysis. They apply computer-based methods to biological and medical questions.

Bioinformatics is offered as a Minor program. It complements a Major study program such as Biology, Biomedicine, Biochemistry, or Informatics. Students need basic university-level knowledge in genetics, molecular biology, evolution, and biochemistry. If these are not covered in their Major, students must acquire them independently before starting bioinformatics modules.

The program develops programming skills and experience with bioinformatics tools. Students take mandatory modules in Python programming, statistics, and applied bioinformatics. Optional courses can be chosen from the Computational Science minor. This Minor enhances analytical thinking and prepares students for computer-based scientific research, MSc theses, PhD projects, or jobs outside academia.
