Biological Sciences is a bachelor's degree program taught in English at the University of Szczecin in Szczecin, Poland, lasting 6 semesters, or 3 years. The program is designed for people interested in water biology who want to build on their interest in the animate world of the hydrosphere. Coursework draws on biology, ecology, molecular biology, chemistry, and geography to give students a grounding in water biology specifically. Through laboratory classes, fieldwork, and lectures, students learn about the living and non-living components of water bodies, connecting this knowledge to the types of water bodies involved and the areas where they occur. By the end of the program, graduates are able to interpret and describe natural phenomena that occur within aquatic ecosystems. Students have access to research equipment belonging to the university's Centre for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and its Mobile Center for Ecological Education and Environmental Monitoring. Biological sciences as a discipline covers the study of living organisms at every scale, from molecules and cells up to whole ecosystems, and a concentration in water biology narrows that scope to rivers, lakes, wetlands, and coastal and marine environments. Students typically study topics such as microbiology, genetics, physiology, and environmental monitoring techniques alongside the specialized hydrobiology content, building skills in laboratory analysis, fieldwork, and data interpretation. Graduates of biology programs with this kind of environmental and aquatic focus go on to work in environmental monitoring agencies, water management authorities, conservation organizations, research institutes, and consultancies that assess water quality and ecosystem health. Others continue into master's-level study in biological or environmental sciences, or move into teaching and science communication roles connected to ecology and environmental protection.
