Master in Biosphere Reserves Management (BIOM)

The Master's programme in Biosphere Reserves Management (BIOM) at Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development provides theoretical, methodological, and practical training in biosphere reserve management. Students learn to develop sustainability strategies using participatory and cooperative approaches, gain knowledge of ecosystems and land use concepts in the context of biodiversity loss and climate change, and examine cultural and socio-economic challenges and opportunities. The first two semesters cover communication; political, legal, and international frameworks of UNESCO biosphere reserves; system functionality and change; project management and innovation; land use systems in socio-ecological and socio-economic contexts; and governance and administration for biosphere reserves and protected areas. The third semester is devoted to an independent research project carried out at the university or at a partner institution in Germany or abroad. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Master's thesis, its defence, and a thesis colloquium. Graduates are prepared to implement the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere programme and work to improve the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
