Master in Biotechnology

Olsztyn, Poland Taught in English Open to international students

About the Program

This master's programme in Biotechnology is offered jointly by the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, Poland, and the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, Germany. Students who complete the programme receive a double MSc, with certificates issued by both institutions. Instruction is in English and the degree is organized over three semesters: the first at the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the second at the University of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, and the third given over to a master's thesis, which can be carried out at either partner university or externally at a company or research institution. The curriculum addresses the use of biotechnology in engineering and environmental protection, food production, and the bioeconomy, including the recovery of bioproducts and energy from waste materials. Students build microbiological knowledge underlying biotechnological processes in environmental engineering and examine how biotechnology can move from laboratory-scale work to technical-scale application. Alongside the technical content, the programme gives students room to develop soft skills and creative thinking, and to consider the trends, prospects, and limitations, including ethical questions, that surround a biotechnology-based economy. Graduates are prepared to work with biotechnologies connected to engineering, environmental protection, bioenergy production, and food. More broadly, biotechnology as a field combines biology, chemistry, and engineering to develop processes and products used in agriculture, medicine, environmental management, and industrial manufacturing, and graduates commonly find roles in laboratories, environmental agencies, food and energy companies, and research institutions across Europe and beyond.
