The Master's programme in Communication and Design for Sustainability at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences runs over 3 semesters and takes an inter- and transdisciplinary approach combining economics, design science, communication, and social sciences. It treats design as a methodology for transforming social and economic conditions through technical, social, and creative means. Topics covered include design thinking, storytelling, stakeholder management, moderation of transformation processes, research through design, and lifestyle research. Most modules are connected to projects, laboratories, and case studies. The first semester addresses fundamentals of sustainable economic models, applied social research, sustainability communication, design science, and media production (30 ECTS). The second semester focuses on qualitative and quantitative research in design and communication, international best practices in sustainable and transformative projects, and students develop their research project proposals (30 ECTS). In the third semester, students develop strategic measures for a design project and a communication project, and the master's thesis and seminar conclude the programme (30 ECTS).
