Composting Facility Operation

Each week you attend a mixture of classroom lectures and three site-based visits to a large windrow composting plant, a smaller green-waste facility and an in-vessel/animal-by-product operation. Practical tasks include monitoring temperature, moisture and aeration, completing written reports on each visit and preparing a final examination paper.

The programme covers the biology of decomposition, the range of composting technologies, process control, environmental impacts and health-and-safety requirements, as well as the regulatory framework governing waste licences and animal by-product rules. You also study marketing, community relations and facility maintenance.

It is aimed at local authority enforcement officers, EPA staff, current or prospective compost operators, facility developers and technology providers. Classes are limited to 30 participants and delivered in a blended, part-time format over a single semester, with a total of 10 credits.
